Falls

The U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) identifies the four most-common construction site hazards as falls, electrocutions, “struck by an object” accidents, and “caught in / between” injuries. Statistics show that – of these four accidents – falls are the most common cause of construction worker fatalities in the United States. In fact, fall protection at construction sites is the most commonly cited OSHA violation.Falls, even from moderate heights such as 6 – 10 feet, often result in disabling injuries. At construction sites, the great heights involved and cluttered or hazardous conditions below frequently mean the catastrophic or fatal injuries result when a fall occurs. Adequate fall protection at the site is critical, and is generally the responsibility of the employer to provide; but sometimes proper fall protection is not provided or is inadequately designed to prevent serious harm. Safety supervisors may be responsible for failing to insure fall protection is present and correctly used. Components of the system may also fail when needed.
